President Donald Trump today criticized (1) trade relations between Brazil and the United States. At a press conference on the new trade agreement between the country, Canada and Mexico (the new NAFTA), signed on Sunday (30), Trump said that Brazil-US trade is unfair and that Brazil treats "unfairly" American women.
Responding to a question about trade relations between India and the United States, Trump said the Asian country charges "absurd rates", very high, and that no previous government "spoke of it."
In addressing the issue of tariffs, the American president cited Brazil as an example of difficult and unfair negotiation: "Brazil is another case. It's a beauty. They charge us what they want and, if you ask some companies, they will say that Brazil is among the hardest in the world, perhaps the hardest.
And he added: "And we never called Brazil to say, 'Look, you're treating our companies unfairly, treating our country unfairly.'"
At the press conference, President Trump repeatedly touched on the issue of US treatment in trade relations, which he considered unfair and unfavorable to the country. "If you look at almost any country, you will see that we have a trade deficit, we lose with everyone," he said.
The United States is Brazil's second largest export market, second only to China. The main items exported to the United States are crude oil, aircraft and manufactured products of iron and steel.
According to the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services, last year Brazil's surplus to the United States was US $ 2.06 billion. The country exported US $ 26.872 billion to the United States and imported a total of US $ 24.846 billion.
Last year, the US economy received 12.3% of the total exported by Brazil. In the case of China, the percentage was 21.8%.
